Vista Grove Kinder Prep
January 2018 Newsletter
Welcome to Vista Grove’s Kinder Prep Program. We are excited to have you join us in some activities to help your child be ready to enjoy the Kindergarten Program next year. There are many ways that we can prepare our children for a year of fun and learning. This month we are continuing to emphasize some ways that you can count down to Kindergarten.
I hope that you enjoyed the counting cards that we sent out in December. Here is a little review of the things that we discussed in 2017:
Reading aloud to your child will provide a great model for their beginning literacy skills. Children mimic what they see and those children who are exposed to books early in life tend to enjoy books later in life. By listening to you read and watching how you treat a book, they begin their first exposure to the printed word. Some parents are taking college classes and feel that they don’t have the time to read to their children. This can be accomplished in a couple different ways. First, read your class material to your child. They will not understand all the words but they will still gain a sense of print awareness. Second, give your child a five minute bedtime story. The library has several “Five Minute” Bedtime Story books. Those five minutes will be well worth the time as it helps your child to settle down and get ready to sleep. There is no doubt that the calming effect of books may put us all to sleep. Remember you do not necessarily have to read to your child in English. You may read to them in whatever language you are comfortable with in your home. The effects are still the same. This month we will be passing out laminated writing cards for the children to practice writing their name. Please register in the office so that we can prepare these teaching tools ahead of time. We look forward to seeing you next month. Ms. Sofiane and Mrs. Mohler
